SHOULDER TO SHOULDER
One of the joys of the Christian life is having fellowship with believers who have the common desire to share the gospel. The Apostle Paul could speak of being “…labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9).
Once a month Douglas Young and I meet up in Glasgow. One particular lunch-time, a man stopped to listen to Douglas preach and seemed about to challenge him, but walked off instead. I approached him and had an amazing conversation. At first John was very sceptical, but became intrigued by the verse in Isaiah 1:18 where the Lord invites us to reason together with Him. John was a retired barrister and familiar with reasoning things through. He was greatly surprised when I told him of John MacGregor, a Scottish barrister, who founded the work of the OAM. He was fascinated and asked for lots of apologetic type literature, saying he would give very serious consideration to things he had often dismissed in the past.
In Carlisle, I was preaching and a local helper saw a young woman listening. As she moved off he approached her. It turned out that Laura prayed regularly, but had no understanding of who she was praying to. She was really interested to know about God, and how to be right with Him. The brother invited me to join the conversation. Later my wife, Marian, took Laura for a coffee and chat and has since been to her home and given her a Bible. This was a real team effort - one preached, another made the initial approach, others followed up.
This also happens with our indoor work. In Stourbridge we had the joy of presenting the Bible Exhibition to about 450 children in a local church. To see so many of the Fellowship getting involved in a variety of ways was thrilling. They commented that this was probably the most effective thing they had ever done to reach so many children. A headteacher stopped off on her way home to deliver a letter of thanks.
Finally, I was involved with a fellowship in Workington for a week of gospel preaching. It was so encouraging to see the lengths to which the Lord’s people had gone, in order to bring the unsaved under the sound of God’s word. One elderly brother invited a young man who was really interested in spiritual things. For well over an hour I spoke with Raphael after one of the evening meetings. Also that week we saw a lady profess faith in the Saviour.
