Steve’s Testimony

NOT JUST UNBELIEVERS

As the character ‘Evangelist’, in John Bunyan’s classic book ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’,often returned to point Christian back on the right path to the Celestial City, so we find ourselves involved in the same calling. As well as speaking to unbelievers, we spend quite a bit of time with Christians too. In Hemel Hempstead we spoke to Nancy. She was from a Russian Orthodox background and was suffering with her second bout of cancer. She told me that she was terrified of dying. What made this encounter so sad was that Nancy really did seem to be a genuine believer. She was not trusting in her good works, but in Christ’s work on her behalf. However, being in this particular denomination she struggled with any sense of assurance. I and a local Pastor, who supports the open-air each week, shared passages from 1 John and Romans chapter 8 with Nancy, to encourage her to be sure that Christ had truly taken the sting of death away for her at the cross.

Also in Hemel Hempstead, as one team member preached, a young man called John stood listening for a while. As he moved away, I went to speak to him and he told me that he was a born-again Christian. Sadly, John’s gypsy life-style made it very difficult for him not to be caught up in sins like drunkenness. He said he felt convicted as he had listened to the preaching, ‘I’m not living according to my calling’. I told him about the importance of putting sin to death in our bodies and the great help we receive from the Holy Spirit as we do this. John was happy to receive a testimony CD about how other people’s lives had been changed. We trust this will encourage him in his walk with the Lord.

Kenny was a very mixed up believer. He came to me in Aylesbury saying that he had lost his job and was struggling financially. On top of this, he had been hearing all kinds of so-called ‘prophecies’ given to him from the church he currently attends. He wanted me to give him help to discern whether these prophecies were true. I showed him various parts of scripture to help him know that these things didn’t sound like God speaking and I urged him instead to rely upon the written Word of God to lead and guide Him. Some believers are not asking for direction and are more of a positive encouragement to me than I need to be to them. Luke has stopped every week I’ve been in Stevenage to just encourage me to carry on the work. I recently found out he is actually homeless and some nights cannot find shelter. Thankfully he belongs to a church that give him as much help as they can. Luke has neither asked me for money or help, nor has he ever complained about his circumstances.
