BLESSINGS IN BIRMINGHAM
This year saw the first Birmingham team event for many years. It was concentrated in the city centre and for 5 days in April we preached the gospel in New Street, one of the main shopping streets in the city. It was a joy to work with the Birmingham City Mission, who run regular open-airs each week. They came out with us each day and the fellowship and co-operation only made the week better. In the evenings we visited a number of local churches – some new to OAM – and sought to enthuse them about the work of the Mission.
We were also blessed with fine weather throughout the week which resulted in good numbers of people stopping, listening and engaging in conversation. One was Jenny whose parents are Christians but have moved back to Barbados. Although Jenny said she appreciated having had a Christian upbringing, she has recently become involved with the spiritualists. ‘I have many questions...’ were her first words. Jenny proved to be very receptive and we were able to have a frank discussion with her about the dangers of the spiritualists. She accepted all that we said and admitted that she knows that her great need is of a Saviour. We were able to pass on details to Jenny of a good evangelical church local to her, which she was very interested in attending.
Another very encouraging contact was with Connor. He had experienced much heartache in his life having lost his mother and father in the past couple of years and more recently his wife aged only 49. These losses had caused him to think about God in a very serious way. Connor shared that he had been attending a Baptist Church and was regularly reading his Bible. It seemed the Lord was really working in his heart. Connor said he recognised that he was a sinner and admitted his need of God.
There was also Alex, who was a former Jehovah’s Witness. He told us that after leaving the organisation he had gone through a time of atheism, but now he just wanted to know the truth. Alex listened carefully as the Bible was explained to him. He even wanted the verses we quoted written down so he could check them out when he got home. He really was a very genuine enquirer.
The above are just snapshots of the many conversations that took place. In total over 90 gospels of John were given away to those who expressed an interest, plus much other literature too. We trust that God’s Word will not return to Him void.
