HOW CAN I BE SURE THERE IS A GOD?
According to one survey, most people believe in God, yet many ask what is He like and how can I know Him?
Our logic tells us that the more complex something is, the more design goes into its production. So logic tells us that someone must have designed this complex world. The Bible tells us that “the invisible things of God from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made” (Romans chapter 1:18). In other words we cannot see God, but the evidence is seen in the things that He has made. Even though we may never seen have the builder of St. Paul’s cathedral, the building is evidence that there was a builder. His name was Sir Christopher Wren.
Some ask, if there is a God, why doesn’t He come down and show Himself? That is exactly what has happened! Jesus Christ was God walking in human form in this world. Jesus lived a public life, died a public death and came back to life from the dead and was seen publicly by hundreds of different people. The facts of Jesus’ life are clearly recorded in history. His life, death and resurrection demonstrate that He was more than just a good man! No one has ever done what He did and this proves that He is who he claimed to be - God.
If there is a God then surely He must be able to communicate with us clearly. He has done so in the Bible. The Bible recorded the facts of Jesus life, death and resurrection before He came. How can you explain his biography being written in detail hundreds of years? No other book in the world has ever come close to this! The Bible doesn’t just record the facts of Jesus; it tells us why He came. Simply stated, the reason was to be the Saviour, or rescuer. He came to pay for our offences against God, so that we could know the barrier of our wrong removed and know a relationship with Him. In order to achieve that, He had to die upon the cross.
We can know these facts but still remain unsure. To really be sure of God, we need to search for Him personally. God has promised, “you will find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). When we really mean business with God and ask Him to forgive us, believing that Jesus died to pay for our sin then God promises that we will find Him and know Him with absolute assurance.
