No one has seen God at any time – the Bible itself admits that! So, how can we be confident that God is there? Consider the following points:
First, how can we be sure of the existence of any one? There are several means we use, by which we are satisfied that certain people exist (or existed). For example –
a) We may believe in their existence because we see the things that they have made. For example, I never met Sir Christopher Wren – he lived in a different century to me! – but when I see St Paul’s Cathedral, I have no doubt that there was such a man. The universe around us speaks loudly and clearly of a creator, one who designed all things and who upholds all things by his power. The evidences of this are so plain that they leave us without excuse if we say we don’t believe in him;
b) Although we may never have met a person, when we read his writings we believe in the author’s existence. The Bible is a message from God to us, in which God declares, “I have written for him the great things of my law” (Hosea 8.12). Though he used human writers, God is the author of the Bible, telling us of our rebellion against him, and of the only way back to him;
c) We may simply believe the word of another person. When I tell people that I have a wife, most people – even those I have never met before – do not doubt that she exists! Why then should you doubt the word of those who claim to have a personal relationship with God through his Son, Jesus Christ?
Secondly, consider the claims of Jesus Christ himself. Read the record of his life and it becomes clear that he cannot just be dismissed as a good man. It has been well said that Jesus was either bad, mad – or God! After all, one who was a good man would not make the monstrous claim to be God – unless it was true! The clear evidence is that Jesus was not mad. And those of his generation who said he was bad only did so because he claimed to be – God! It is true that Jesus made such claims: he used descriptions of himself that were used of God elsewhere in the Bible; he claimed to be the revelation of God to mankind. And he proved those claims by miracles that demonstrated his power over all creation. God has revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ!
Thirdly, the surest way to know that God exists is to encounter him for yourself. In the Bible, God himself invites you, saying, “You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29.12). And Jesus promised, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matthew 7.7). Seek God today. Go to him in prayer, confess your doubts and unbelief, and ask him to reveal himself to you. He will hear your prayer and his Holy Spirit will show you that God indeed exists, who sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be the Saviour that you need!
