In London one day, he saw an open-air outreach taking place with two or three preachers sharing the message of the Saviour’s love with a small crowd who surrounded them. John MacGregor’s heart was stirred as he realised that this was the way to reach the careless multitudes he encountered every day. He waited until the meeting ended, then spoke to those involved. They agreed to meet for prayer and a few days later a prayer meeting took place in the Holborn area of London. In that prayer meeting the work of The Open-Air Mission was born. John Macgregor wrote in his diary: ‘I see in this a small beginning of what may, yes will, be a great, noble and blessed undertaking. ’ He could never have foreseen that the work would be continuing so many years later! What a testimony the mission is to the greatness and faithfulness of God. We have a valid Safeguarding policy in operation under the supervision of Safeguarding Co-ordinators and Trustees. However owing to the nature of our work in meeting with members of the public in various settings we do not take direct responsibility for any individual who we come into contact with. On Beach Missions, parents/guardians retain responsibility for their children; at Bible Exhibitions, the school or church retains responsibility for the children; at externally-run events, the organiser retains the responsibility for the children (please note, OAM workers will abide by the principles of any external safeguarding policies provided to them) and in street evangelism we do not take responsibility for those we meet. For OAM hosted-events, our own Safeguarding Policy is in operation. Our Safeguarding Policy is available upon request. --- What have we learned from Covid 19? What if Jesus had not been born? Today, there are still vast crowds of lost people who will never walk through the door of a church to hear the good news of the gospel. For over 170 years The Open-Air Mission has been going out onto the streets to bring the good news of Christ’s death and resurrection to those who may never otherwise hear it. As a mission we seek: To be connected to the local church. We believe in the importance of the local church and all our evangelists and team members belong to Bible-believing churches. We seek the support of local churches in each area we operate in. We put enquirers in contact with local churches and equip churches in evangelism by providing training in open-air work and helpful evangelistic literature. To be engaging in our preaching. We aim to connect with individuals. We rarely use amplification when preaching as this can have the effect of driving people away. We want to be friendly faces who draw people to listen to the preaching and then into personal conversation with us. Every week, hundreds of conversations take place with those on our open-air teams across the UK. To work with teams of believers. Most open-airs are supported by men and women from local churches. Their support is invaluable. Not all are preachers. Some listen, some hand out literature, whilst others are able to engage in one to one conversation with those who have stopped. We encourage believers to work together in reaching out with the gospel. --- To receive a free enquirer's pack by post please fill in your details below. More details can be found here. --- Welcome to the new OAM website. We trust that you like what you see, read and watch! The message of the gospel is unchanging because the need of sinners is unchanging! We all realise that we live in an increasingly media-driven world. Through the media we use, our great desire is to bring the unchanging gospel to this fast-changing world and to equip God’s people to do the same. At a recent committee meeting, Mike Mellor drew our attention to when the Apostle Paul was preaching in Antioch in Acts 13. In verse 36 Paul refers to King David having ‘... served his own generation’. That is exactly what we want to do! Our print and website material has served us well over a long period, but the time has come to refresh our material to help connect with and serve today’s generation. Our new magazine title, In the Open, was chosen because it communicates in simple terms what we do – we go out into the open to reach people with the good news of Jesus Christ. We are open about it! There are no gimmicks or deceptive methods. The gospel is simply, relevantly and winsomely declared. We have commissioned the design of a refreshed logo which will be used across all our materials. As a committee we are grateful to all who have worked so hard to bring these changes to life. We are pleased with the result and pray that it will enable us to communicate better... --- Around 30 delegates joined us at King’s Park Conference Centre recently at our Supporters’ Conference. We were encouraged from the Word as Committee Member, Mark Fisher, brought encouragements from Zechariah chapters 1-4. Evangelists Stuart Lythgoe and Douglas Young also gave encouraging in-depth reports on their work. Other features of the conference included prayer-times, a question panel, fellowship and good food! --- Recently, the Evangelists and some of the Committee gather for a mini conference to enjoy prayer, ministry and fellowship together along with discussing practical matters pertaining to the work. Helpful ministry on the subject of ‘Spiritual Warfare’ was brought to us by Committee member, Steve Burton. --- A new children’s tract: ‘The Life of Jesus‘ has recently been produced by the Mission. Although designed to complement the Bible Exhibition (www. bible-exhibition. uk) it can be used in a variety of contexts. Please visit our online shop to order copies. --- --- ## Questions We all have a sense of justice built into us. When someone steals from us, we want the offender to receive justice. When we read about a terrible atrocity, we know that the perpetrator should be held accountable for their crimes. However, when we hear the Bible's teachings on hell, many see that as a step too far. How can a loving God send people to a place of eternal punishment for the wrong they have done? Sin is against the light God has given us The Bible teaches that all human beings are accountable to God because He has written His law upon our hearts. Murder, theft, adultery, love of money, disobedience to authority, hatred, backbiting, slander, impure thoughts and looks, gluttony; the list could go on. These are all things we know to be wrong because God made us in His image and gave us a conscience that testifies for or against us in our minds. Humans "... show the work of the law written on their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them... " (Romans 2:15). No one will be able to say on the day of judgment that they didn't know they were doing wrong. The recent "partygate" scandal was big news because those who wrote the lockdown laws were knowingly flouting them and thus deserve a greater degree of accountability than those who were unfamiliar with the law. Likewise, the sins we commit are in spite of... --- Many people ask this question following a recent national tragedy: "How could God allow that to happen? " Others ask it out of deep personal hurt and struggle with suffering. Still others think that this is the great question that overturns the truth of the Bible. To answer the question, we need to first think about the question itself. The question assumes a number of things that actually point us back to the Bible: Suffering and death are not good It might seem obvious to say that suffering and death are not good things, but apart from the Bible, we have no foundation for saying that. In the atheistic worldview, suffering is simply the brain chemistry firing in the biological computers of sentient beings, and nothing more. Suffering is neither good nor bad; it just is. Furthermore, evolution teaches that suffering is the means by which many species have advanced through a process of survival of the fittest... . we have a sense deep down inside that it’s not meant to be this way. And that’s exactly what the Bible teaches. However, the Bible says that suffering was not part of God's original design for the world. The world God made was good (Genesis 1:31). Adam and Eve were without death and suffering in the beginning, and they lived in perfect relationship with God in the garden of Eden. However, suffering and death entered when man rebelled against God. As a consequence of Adam's sin, God cursed the world, and... --- In the UK, suicide is one of the leading causes of death for individuals aged 20-34 years old. Many people tragically come to the point where they believe their lives have no meaning or purpose and that the only solution to end their suffering is to end it. Even for those who do not make such a tragic decision, life can seem empty and purposeless. But is there a reason for our lives? Is there an ultimate purpose in the universe? Blind, pitiless indifference Atheism tells us that ultimately, there is no purpose in the universe. Everything came to be by chance through chemical reactions and slow, gradual, purposeless changes. The atheist Richard Dawkins famously said, "In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference. " (River out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life). Materialistic, atheistic naturalism has been pushed in schools and mainstream media for decades. Is it any wonder that so many feel they have no ultimate reason for living? "Be who you are" Another view says that we should simply generate our own reason for living. We can determine our own identities and live according... --- Today, many people view the Bible as, at best, ancient stories with some moral meaning, and, at worst, fabricated lies developed to control people. Many doubt the reliability and truthfulness of the Bible. When looking at the Bible it is important to recognise that we are not looking at one book written by one person, but rather at a library of 66 books written over a period of 1,500 years. We also need to know that these writings did not come into being because the writers decided to give us their thoughts about God; but rather, as the Apostle Peter says, they were compelled to write what they did regardless of the consequences (see 1 Peter 1:21; Acts 3:21). The Bible is the only book in the world that dares to claim to be inspired by God. In a world where we appear to be surrounded by all kinds of deceptions, we have been given a book that will help us to identify all that is false, and to show us the way of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 3:15-16; Psalm 119:160). Prophecies Evidence that the Bible is God’s inspired word can be seen in the hundreds of prophecies that predict certain events that would happen in the future, and which were subsequently fulfilled years later... . how were these prophets able to speak of all these things hundreds of years before they happened? In particular there are many prophecies concerning Jesus Christ; telling us the circumstances... --- People have a lot of different ideas about what happens to us when we die. Some think that when we die, that’s the end of us; we’re buried or cremated and that’s it. But that view assumes that we’re made of flesh and blood and nothing else. The Bible teaches that we have souls, as well as bodies. Jesus once asked the question, ‘What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul? ’ (Mark 8:36). There is a real part of all of us that is not physical, and Jesus was saying that our souls are worth more than anything else, even our bodies. The reason for that is our souls will go on living even when our bodies are dead. Some people think that we come back as someone or something else after we die. Actually, the Bible says that we only get one shot at life and that we don’t come back to this earth when we die. Instead, we will all have to meet God. Still others will say something like this, ‘I’d like to believe in life after death, but no-one really knows. If only someone would come back from the dead and tell us’. Well, there’s something incredible that we need to know. Someone has come back from the dead and His name is Jesus Christ! God is a pure and holy God, who cannot put up with our sin. We all know that when we do wrong,... --- Many people today are asking, "How can I know what is true? " We have all experienced believing something only to find out later that it was a lie. Trust in the government and mainstream media is at an all-time low, and many are skeptical of voices of "authority" on different matters. So how can we confidently get to the bottom of the big questions of life: Where do I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going when I leave this world? No Truth? Some people say that we can't know the answers to those questions because the truth is elusive. I once met a man in London who had just come out of a church service. When I asked him what he believed, he told me he didn't believe anything for sure because he was "living the question. " Another man recently told me that the only thing we can be sure about is that we can't be sure about anything. The problem with this line of reasoning is that it is logically self-defeating. How can we be sure that we can't be sure about anything? That is a claim of certainty, claiming there is no certainty! Science to the Rescue Others claim that we can arrive at the truth by scientific observation. If we apply the scientific method to the world around us, we can answer the big questions of life. However, as useful as the scientific method is, it is inherently limited. It can... --- Many people today claim that they do not believe in a creator or any supernatural deity. They argue that believing in the God of the Bible is irrational due to a lack of evidence. Atheists are typically materialists, believing that the world came about through unguided forces over millions of years and that physical matter is all that exists. However, there are several problems with this position. If ... our thoughts are merely chemical reactions taking place in our brain, then we cannot trust our own reasoning No reason for reason! Firstly, while atheists appeal to reason, atheism itself cannot account for reason and logic. If our minds are simply the product of time and chance, and our thoughts are merely chemical reactions taking place in our brain, then we cannot trust our own reasoning. If our brains are merely biological computers with inputs and outputs, there is no reason to believe that our decisions are right and true. However, Christians have a reason to believe in universal truth and logic. The Bible teaches that God is a God of order and wisdom, and He has built into the universe certain unchanging laws that reflect His nature. Even more, He created man in His own image (Genesis 1:27). As image bearers of God, we have the gift of rational thought and decision-making. Claiming that believing in the God of the Bible is unreasonable is self-defeating because without the God of the Bible, we have no foundation for universal reason or... --- Throughout history, most human societies have believed in some form of afterlife. This should be no surprise as the Bible tells us that God has ‘put eternity in their hearts’ (Ecclesiastes 3:11). We all have a sense of there being more to life than this present world. But when it comes to describing what heaven is like, people have many conflicting ideas. Will it be a place of clouds, harps and cherubs? Will it contain our favourite pleasures on earth? Will it be boring? Who will go there? We cannot answer these questions by speculation and observation, as heaven is not part of this present material realm. However, in the Bible, God has graciously revealed them to us. Who lives there? The first thing we need to know about heaven is that the Bible describes it as the dwelling place of God. Psalm 11:4 tell us, ‘The LORD is in His holy temple, The LORD’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. ’ This might surprise us, as the Bible also tells us that that God cannot be contained anywhere. A king called Solomon once said of God, ‘Heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You! ’ (2 Chronicles 6:18). So how do reconcile these two realities? The answer is that while God is present everywhere, He shows His presence and glory particularly in the place the Bible calls heaven. In heaven, the goodness, majesty, justice and holiness of God are on... --- The beginning Many people think that the Christian life begins at birth. If you are born into a Christian home, or in a country with a Christian heritage, then you must be a Christian. However, the Bible teaches that the Christian life doesn’t begin at birth. The Christian life starts with being ‘born again’. This is what Jesus Himself told Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’ (John 3:3). Nicodemus didn’t understand, and so he asked the question we all might ask: ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? ’ (John 3:4). Jesus told him being born again was not a physical birth like being born the first time when we came out of our mother’s womb with water. Being born again is a spiritual birth that is by faith. Nicodemus was a Pharisee (a religious leader). He knew the history of God’s people. When they were in the desert, God sent poisonous snakes to bite them. Once bitten, they died. Thousands died. The people urged their leader Moses to do something, and when he asked God what he should do, God told him to make a bronze serpent, like the real ones, and set it up on a pole in the desert. If anyone that had been bitten looked at that bronze serpent, they would live... --- ---
