‘Is it possible to know God personally?’

Many people believe in a “Supreme Being” behind the design of the universe, but few believe truly knowing God is possible. “How Can I Know God?” is a clear evangelistic tract designed to show that God is not remote or unknowable. God has revealed Himself to us in creation, through our consciences and through the person and work of Jesus Christ. He has made a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him through the cross of Christ.

How Can I Know God?

This question is one of the most important we can ever ask. Many people feel sure there must be a Supreme Being behind a universe that clearly shows evidence of order and design. But it is another matter altogether to say that we can know God personally.

Is there a Supreme Being? Can we know Him personally?

However, God has told us in the Bible that He can be known. In fact, He encourages us to look for Him: 'Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near' (Isaiah 55:6).

The Bible tells us that God has revealed Himself to us in various ways:

Through creation

'The heavens declare the glory of God' (Psalm 19:1).

Through our conscience

'... their conscience also bearing witness, and ... their thoughts accusing... them' (Romans 2:15).

Through Jesus Christ

'God... has in these last days spoken to us by His Son' (Hebrews 1:2).

What stops us from knowing God?

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. From beginning to end it reveals God to us. It also tells us why He seems so far off and remote from us.

God is holy and righteous. By contrast we are sinful and can't obey God's commandments. This separates us from Him: 'your iniquities [wrongdoings] have separated you from your God' (Isaiah 59:2). Sin is a barrier between God and us. Until it is dealt with we can't enjoy a personal relationship with God.

Is it possible to know God?

Yes, because God loves us very much He has made a way for sinners to be brought back to Him, even though we don't deserve it. God sent His Son, the sinless Lord Jesus Christ, into this world to die for sinners.

'For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God' (1 Peter 3:18).

Jesus died to pay for our sins, so God can now offer forgiveness and reconciliation to all who come to Him.

How can I know God personally?

Turn from your sin and seek God's mercy: 'Let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy... And to our God, for He will abundantly pardon' (Isaiah 55:7).

Ask God to forgive your sins. Put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour. Through Jesus you can come to know God and be part of His family: 'to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name' (John 1:12).
