Reaching holidaymakers with the gospel

Each year, OAM holds a team outreach in Cornwall during the busy summer season. As thousands of holidaymakers visit the area, there is a valuable opportunity to reach many with the gospel. The outreach is timed to coincide with the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay, when the town is filled with young people, many of whom pass by as we preach.

When does it take place?

Dates: 2–9 August

Arrival and departure:
The team arrives at Newquay Evangelical Church on Sunday 2nd August in time for the evening service and departs the following Sunday (9th) after the morning service.

What does the outreach involve?

The main focus of the outreach is open-air preaching in busy town centres and popular tourist locations.

Most outreach takes place during the day. Towards the end of the week, there are usually two evening open-air meetings in Newquay. Earlier in the week, we typically visit different locations across Cornwall, before concentrating on Newquay during the Boardmasters Festival.

There are a variety of ways to be involved, including:

  • Open-air preaching
  • Literature tables
  • Leaflet distribution
  • ‘Question of the day’ engagement
  • Listening to and supporting preaching
  • Personal conversations

The range of methods used means there are opportunities for people with different gifts and levels of experience to take part.

Who is this outreach for?

This outreach is suitable for those new to open-air work as well as those with more experience. Whether you are a preacher, prefer one-to-one conversations, or want to help through tract distribution, there is a place for you to serve.

Training and encouragement

Team events provide an excellent opportunity to grow in our ability to share the gospel, and the Cornwall outreach is no exception. There will be opportunities to learn from more experienced workers, gain practical experience, and receive feedback and encouragement if you would find that helpful.

Accommodation and base

During the week, the team is based at Newquay Evangelical Church, where we sleep and share meals together. The church has excellent facilities for hosting the team and is very supportive of the outreach.

Team members should bring camp beds and sleeping equipment, as we sleep in various rooms within the church building.

Food and practical arrangements

Meals are prepared and eaten together at Newquay Evangelical Church, allowing for good fellowship and time to reflect on the day’s outreach.

Why join this outreach?

If you have a desire to reach people with the gospel and would value serving in a busy, open-air setting — particularly among younger crowds — this is an excellent opportunity. Set in a coastal location during the height of summer, the Cornwall outreach combines purposeful gospel work with the encouragement of serving together as a team.
