Who Can You Trust?
Trust is vital in life. We need to trust others in our relationships, for our health and our security. All too often though our trust is betrayed. Promises are broken. People let us down.
Those who say they are telling the truth may have their own agenda. Institutions make bold claims to earn our trust, but often fail to deliver.
Who is telling the truth about the most important issues of life? Who can you trust?
Someone who is true
The God of the Bible is utterly trustworthy. He is the God who is 'the same, yesterday, today and for ever' (Hebrews 13:8). The Bible itself claims to be the true Word of God. Central to the Bible's message is Jesus Christ who said, 'I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me' (John 14:6).
Someone who can't lie to you
The Bible tells us many times that God cannot lie. He is not like us, but is true and unchanging. What a comfort! When God speaks, He is telling the absolute truth and we can trust Him.
But we may not always like what we hear: Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth, the one who sins is a slave to sin' (John 8:34).
Someone who knows you
He's right, of course. The Bible tells us that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23), and that God knows and judges us for everything we think, do or say. No one wants to believe that. How can we make ourselves good enough for God? It is impossible.
Someone who loves you
Yet God tells us this, not because He is hateful and vindictive, but because He is true and must judge all sin. He warns us out of love and then shows us how He can forgive us, to make us right with Him and to avoid the justice we deserve.
Some of the most famous words in the Bible tell us this: 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life' (John 3:16).
Someone able to save you
This means that Jesus gave His life to pay our debt of sin and satisfy God's justice. Then He rose from the dead, defeating sin's power to condemn us. We can rely on Him for our eternal security.
Religion can only patch up sin with ritual and effort, so it's not surprising that religious people are often exposed as hypocrites. The Bible states: 'This is a trustworthy saying... Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners' (1 Timothy 1:15). The writer then went on to say, 'of whom I am the chief'. He was honest enough to confess his ignorance and wrongdoing and turn to the Lord Jesus for saving grace and forgiveness.
The Bible presents three simple truths:
God is the morally perfect life-giver who one day will require you to account for your life.
No-one is good enough for God; we all deserve His justice.
He rescues and saves all who trust in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
So what about you? God promises that if you 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ...you will be saved' (Acts 16:31). Turn from your sin and trust the Lord Jesus Christ today!
